Officers are investigating after a Tesla driver allegedly ran a red light and crashed into two cars, killing another driver and injuring himself and at least two others Wednesday night, Kent police said.
As many as five were injured in the crash, in addition to the driver who was killed, said Pat Pawlak, Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority division chief.
Officers arrested the Tesla driver, a 23-year-old Spanaway man, after he was treated at a hospital for injuries. Police are testing the man’s blood for drugs or alcohol, Kentpolice said in a statement Thursday.
The statement did not identify the 30-year-old Puyallup man who died after being extricated from his car and taken to a hospital.
Multiple people called 911 shortly after 9:45 p.m. to report seeing a Tesla driving southbound through a red light at Central Avenue North and East Smith Street, then hitting a gray Toyota Prius in the intersection, and then hitting a red Toyota Prius as it was leaving a restaurant parking lot, Kent police said in the statement.
Kent police officers and Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority crews broke through the red Prius’ windows to extricate the driver after finding the car doors locked and the vehicle pushed into a nearby wall. He was the only person in the car, Kent police said .
Two of the Tesla driver’s three passengers were taken to a hospital with serious injuries, Kent police said.
Kent police did not immediately respond Thursday to questions about the crash, including whether the Tesla driver had been driving on Autopilot.
