MAUs of leading casual dating apps in China 2024
In September 2024, Momo remained the most popular mobile app for online dating in China, with about 66 million monthly active users. The company acquired another popular Chinese dating app, Tantan, in 2018, further securing its dominance in China’s casual dating app market.
Momo and Tantan
Momo and Tantan belong to the same internet company, Hello Group Inc., which reported to have an annual net revenue of 12 billion yuan in 2023. Started as a location-based app, Momo has gradually evolved into a platform for social interactions and dating. On the other hand, Tantan is often referred to as the “Chinese Tinder” because of its swipe-left, swipe-right mechanism. The duo had been pairing users primarily based on their physical appearance, leading to allegations of fostering a hookup-oriented culture. They also temporarily halted certain in-app features in response to regulatory scrutiny in 2019 regarding disseminating pornographic content on their platforms.
Soul
Soul, backed by Tencent, stands out in the social app landscape with its inventive elements like virtual socializing, matching, and interest mapping. In contrast to the gender distribution of users on Momo and Tantan, Soul boasts a higher percentage of female users, reaching 35.6 percent as of March 2022. Positioned as a “Social Metaverse for the Young,” it is preparing for an initial public offering in Hong Kong following a prosperous year in 2022, during which it generated approximately 219 million U.S. dollars in revenue.
